The Etape Extrem

Up next…The Etape Extrem, Sunday 21st June!

At 226 miles and 3878 meters of climbing, this will be the longest, toughest one day cycle sportive in the UK and possibly the world! Run by Always Aim High Events and Chain Reaction cycles, participants ride all three routes of the Etape Eyri – the Canol and Mawr, followed by the Bach – taking in the atmospheric festival on the iconic Maes after every route.

The event is based in Caernarfon and promises to be a great weekend. My parents are once again on support duty – my father can’t say I don’t give him interesting outings for Fathers’ Day!

We have between 0400 and 2200 (18 hours) to complete the ride. For the Race Around Ireland I will need to be completing between 250-270 miles a day so this will be a really good indication of how a continuous ride of this sort of duration will feel and how well I recover from it. My climbing legs will definitely be tested with the challenging terrain around Snowdonia! Once again it will be a chance to trial kit and nutrition/ recovery strategies. With it being the longest day of the year, we won’t be riding a lot in the dark, but being in Wales the weather may very well prove the biggest challenge of all! Watch this space…
