A key part of my mission is to raise funding and awareness for Hounds for Heroes so as part of the “Going the Extra Mile….” campaign, I decided to combine training, dogs and the veterinary world! In March I joined the Hounds for Heroes on their stand at Crufts and did a 10 hour sponsored ride and in April I upped the ante and did a 12 hour ride on the Hounds stand at BSAVA Congress (the biggest veterinary education and trade exhibition in the UK). For both rides we held a “Guess how far I’ll ride…” competition; people could donate and make a guess and we had some generous prizes on offer from sponsors.
Both rides were excellent training for me; whilst I’d done reasonably long turbo sessions indoors during the winter months, I’d never gone beyond 6 hours but 10 and 12 hours really replicate the sort of challenges I will face during RAW and RAAM in terms of continuous time on the bike. Both venues were also very warm and it was therefore a great chance to test my hydration strategy.
We had great support for both events and raised nearly £700. It was lovely to meet so many of the loyal supporters of Hounds for Heroes, as well as hopefully introducing some new ones to the charity. The legs did well and I clocked up over 300 miles across the two events. A good reminder that “Together we can”.
